New Delhi: Captain Suryakumar Yadav has revealed the powerful message delivered by head coach Gautam Gambhir after India national cricket team secured a historic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final. India defeated New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the title clash in Ahmedabad to lift their third T20 World Cup trophy and successfully defend the title.
According to Suryakumar, Gambhir addressed the team in the dressing room with the World Cup trophy placed at the centre, reminding players of the lasting value of the achievement. He stressed that while teams may win many bilateral series, the glory of a World Cup triumph remains unforgettable.
Suryakumar said the coach had limited chances to smile during the early stages of the tournament but appeared delighted with the team’s aggressive batting approach later in the competition. India’s powerful performances saw the team consistently post massive totals and dominate opponents throughout the tournament.
The captain also expressed pride in leading the side to consecutive T20 World Cup titles, describing the achievement as a special moment for the entire squad. He highlighted the team’s meticulous preparation for the tournament, noting that playing in familiar home conditions helped the players plan their strategies effectively. According to him, the team focused on understanding situations during matches and prioritising what the side required at any given moment.
Suryakumar also admitted that one decision during the tournament turned out to be a mistake. He acknowledged that leaving out all rounder Axar Patel for the Super Eight match against South Africa national cricket team was an error. India lost that game, their only defeat in the tournament, after opting to include Washington Sundar in the lineup. The captain later apologised to Axar, who initially reacted strongly but accepted the explanation after discussions within the team.
India’s victory was powered by explosive batting performances. Abhishek Sharma struck a rapid half century, while Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan built a crucial partnership to take India to a massive 255 for 5, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.
New Zealand were later bowled out for 159 despite a fighting half century from Tim Seifert, sealing a memorable triumph for India on home soil.
