PORVORIM: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Goa, has strongly opposed the Directorate of Education’s recent circular mandating schools to observe “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” in connection with the Emergency period of 1975-77.
In a formal letter addressed to the Director of Education, NSUI State President Naushad Chowdhari has demanded immediate withdrawal of Circular No. DE/Acad/Circular/11/472/2024/13-34 dated 24/06/2025.
The circular directs schools to conduct essay competitions, exhibitions, and other activities highlighting the alleged “murder of the Constitution” during the Emergency. NSUI has termed this move as politically motivated and an attempt to inject a biased historical narrative into educational institutions.
Chowdhari argued that schools must remain politically neutral spaces and warned that engaging students in such activities could expose them to one-sided interpretations of complex historical events.
“This risks compromising students’ ability to learn with objectivity and undermines their critical thinking,” he said.
Further, NSUI raised concerns that these activities divert attention from academic priorities and place an unnecessary burden on students and teachers.
The student body also defended the historical context of the Emergency, stating that while the period was challenging, it also included efforts aimed at addressing inflation, improving agricultural productivity, and implementing family planning measures.
“Labeling it solely as a ‘dark day’ is an oversimplification that denies students a balanced understanding of history,” the memorandum said.
Calling for the immediate withdrawal of the circular, NSUI emphasized the need to preserve the sanctity of educational spaces and ensure that history is presented with fairness and depth.
