New Delhi: The Indian Air Force operationalised the Mudh-Nyoma airbase in Ladakh on Wednesday, marking a major step in strengthening India’s air capabilities near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh landed at the newly completed airbase aboard a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, officially commissioning the high-altitude facility.
Situated at an altitude of around 13,000 feet and approximately 25 km from the LAC, the Nyoma airbase is now equipped to handle fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters. The project, implemented by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at a cost of Rs 218 crore, enhances the Indian military’s ability to respond swiftly in this strategically sensitive region.
Air Chief Marshal Singh was accompanied by Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra, head of the Western Air Command, during the inaugural flight. The new airbase is expected to play a vital role in improving air operations, logistics, and rapid troop movement along the northern frontier.
The foundation stone for the Mudh-Nyoma airbase was laid in September 2023 by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. With its completion, it becomes the fourth major airbase in Ladakh, joining existing facilities in Leh, Kargil, and Thoise. The Kargil airstrip, for comparison, lies at an altitude of around 10,500 feet.
The Ministry of Defence has been steadily upgrading airfield infrastructure along the LAC to bolster readiness for both combat and humanitarian operations. This includes improving Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) and other high-altitude bases. Work is also underway to enhance the Daulat Beg Oldi ALG, located at 16,700 feet, making it the highest operational airfield in the world.
The activation of Nyoma airbase represents a significant advancement in India’s strategic deterrence posture, ensuring faster deployment and enhanced surveillance capability across the Himalayan frontier.
