Old Goa: The government has halted work on the proposed development and parking project in Old Goa following the discovery of ancient artefacts during excavation works at the site. The move comes after the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) raised concerns and recommended the cancellation of the project, sealing of the site, and a comprehensive preservation plan for the recovered items.
Minister for Archives and Archaeology, Subhash Phaldesai, confirmed that the government has maintained a status quo after the ASI wrote to authorities detailing the findings, which include cannons, coins, and pottery believed to be of historical significance.
“The ASI has taken serious note of the discoveries and has asked for the project to be shelved and the area protected,” Phaldesai stated. He said the government is cooperating fully with ASI directives and will ensure that all artefacts are preserved in accordance with archaeological norms.
