“The old Zuari bridge which was constructed in the year 1983 is presently in good condition. Over the period of time rehabilitation in the form of external prestressing and repairs to the riding surface were carried out,” said Sawant
However, load restrictions of vehicles weighing upto 12MT with maximum speed of 30kmph have been imposed. Presently, the said bridge is used only for one-way traffic moving from Panjim to Cortalim
“The awarded cost of the new bridge is Rs.545.40Crs. As of now, there is no proposal to collect toll from the vehicles on New Zuari Bridge,” informed CM
Light cars continue to utilize the Zuari bridge, which is inspected on a regular basis. consumed But the Karwar tragedy has raised further worries. Like the bridge in Karwar that fell, this one is about forty years old.
It took around ten years to complete the remaining fifteen to twenty percent of the structure’s reinforcement, and during that time the structure is anticipated to have weakened.
“The historic Zuari bridge is a cantilever construction with balance. This is a delicate balance, and one impacted section has the potential to tip the entire system off balance. Because of the high salinity in Goa, the technique is not as effective as it was in other places, according to an official.
Despite having a 70-year lifespan at first, the official stated that as technology advanced, it was discovered that cantilever structures are unsuitable for saline conditions because of how quickly corrosion develops there.
