CANACONA: A large-scale Disaster Mock Drill simulating a train accident was conducted on Thursday evening by the Community Health Centre (CHC), Canacona, in coordination with the Deputy Collector’s office, Police, Fire & Emergency Services (F\&ES), Vigilance Department, Lions Club, and various social workers and volunteers.
The scenario involved a simulated train accident on the Konkan Railway route passing through Canacona, with reports of several casualties and critically injured victims.
In response, CHC Canacona immediately activated its disaster response protocol, recalling all its staff — medical, non-medical, contract, and auxiliary. Ambulances were quickly dispatched to the accident site, and the entire 158-member CHC team , under the leadership of Health Officer Dr. Benedita Dias, mobilized efficiently.
Ambulances and other transport vehicles began to arrive with mock accident victims, where police, fire personnel, social workers, and CHC staff provided immediate support in shifting the injured to the hospital.
A total of 12 volunteers acted as accident victims during the drill. One was declared “brought dead”, while others simulated conditions such as head injuries, clavicle fracture, tibia fracture, unconsciousness, and minor injuries. The deceased was taken for post-mortem simulation, while the injured were triaged, provided first aid and trauma care, and subsequently “shifted” to the South Goa District Hospital and Goa Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.
The drill demonstrated a high level of coordination and readiness among CHC Canacona staff and participating agencies to respond effectively in the event of a real disaster. The exercise emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration, rapid mobilization, and trauma care preparedness.
The event concluded successfully, reinforcing the critical role of preparedness in disaster management.
