PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has raised concerns over Goa’s rising road fatalities, revealing that the state loses at least one life every day to road accidents—totaling over 365 deaths annually.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the Driver Sensitisation Tab Lab held at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) near the KTC bus stand in Panaji.
Sawant pointed out a stark contrast in public attitudes toward safety, saying, “We were extremely cautious during COVID-19, but we don’t show the same concern for road safety.”
The newly introduced ‘Wrong Side of the Road’ initiative is aimed at addressing this mindset. The programme features a 45-minute session that blends video-based education with attitudinal testing to promote reflective and responsible driving behavior.
In a significant policy shift, Sawant announced that completion of the module will be a mandatory requirement for all individuals applying for new or renewed driving licenses in Goa.
The Tab Labs, part of a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, have been installed across all nine RTOs in the state and are expected to improve awareness around traffic rules, road discipline, and accident prevention.
