CANACONA: Even though 285 people were screened, at the 5th such camp in the State of Goa at Canacona, 21 suspected new cases and one case of cancer recurrence were detected at the Cancer Screening Camp on Saturday.
According to sources, one recurring Oral cancer case is found, and another 15 oral cases of different types of lesions are detected and referred by the Dental Team even as 6 suspected Cancer cases in 1-breast Screenings are detected.
While some blood test reports are awaited, all the suspicious cancer cases detected are mostly of the initial stages and the same will be further analysed, sources added.
According to CHC sources, the number of I-breast Screened is 108, out of which 06 numbers of suspects are detected and referred for further analysis.
Out of 66 patients (32-Male, 34 Female), patients were referred for Oral screenings and early detection findings by GDCH, 1 case of Right Buccal Mucosa (treated) with recurrence on the hard palate were found, while under Premalignant lesions 5 cases of Oral Submucous Fibrosis, Leukoplakia (2) and Tobacco Pauch Keratosis (1), even as other lesions cases of Mucocele(2), Lymphadenopathy (1), Lichen Planus (1), Aphthous ulcer (1), Frictional Keratosis(1) and Traumatic Fibroma (1) wee detected while treatment was done to 11 different type of cases.
Even as 21 new Cancer cases are detected, locals are left to wonder if Cancer is the next major ailment to affect Canacona people after the rampant Renal Failure cases found amongst the people residing in the taluka.
285 people have been screened by the joint team of doctors and medical attendants from Goa Medical College, Goa Dental College & Hospital (GDCH), IME and Directorate of Health Services, govt of Goa.
The Cancer Screening camp is held at Community Health Centre (CHC), Canacona organised by the Government of Goa in coordination with Goa Medical College and Hospitals, Bambolim on Cancer Screening Abhiyan at Canacona Taluka was inaugurated at the hands of Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, in the presence of Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Sara Shamba Naik Desai and others.
Doctors and Specialists from the Dental College for detecting oral cancer, Consultants, Specialists, Surgeons, Gynaecologists, Radiologists from Goa Medical College, IME and the Directorate of Health Services conducted the various screening and tests during the camp.
