MAPUSA: In the early hours of March 6, eight people were arrested by the Mapusa Police for betting on Champions Trophy cricket matches as part of a significant crackdown on illicit online betting.
Based on previous intelligence, a police team under the command of PSI Yeshwant Mandrekar conducted a raid on Cipriano Coelho’s home in Pirazona, Moira, between 12.45 and 4 in the morning. The accused were apprehended using electronic devices to engage in online betting.
In addition to Sanjay Laxmandas Lalwani (28), Deepak Sudhir Bagga (36), and Laxmikant Parasram Joshi (49) from Maharashtra, the police have also detained Krishna Mahender Mukhiya (24) from Bihar, Sparsh Lalit Bhargav (32) from Delhi, and Pradeep Kumar Sharma (34), Omprakash Kumar Yogi (28), and Rakesh Kumar Darji (25), all from Rajasthan.
Mobile phones, laptops, and other electronic devices used for online betting operations totaling about Rs 2 lakh were confiscated by the police during the raid.
Authorities are looking into additional connections to illicit betting networks as part of the ongoing investigation into the case.
