PANAJI: Only one nomination has been filed for the December 20 Zilla Panchayat elections in the first two days of the process.
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), no papers were submitted on the opening day, December 1. On the following day, Independent candidate John Beda Pedro Pereira entered the fray from the Velim constituency in South Goa.
Nominations will be accepted until December 9. Voting for all 50 ZP constituencies is slated for December 20, with counting scheduled on December 22.
Among political parties, the AAP has so far announced 37 candidates, the BJP has named 19, and the Congress has declared 11 nominees. The MGP plans to contest three seats, while the GFP, in alliance talks with the Congress, is targeting 10 constituencies.
As per the election calendar, nomination papers will not be received on December 3 (public holiday) and December 7 (Sunday). Scrutiny is fixed for December 10 between 10 am and 3 pm, and candidates may withdraw their names until 2 pm on December 11, after which the final list will be published.
