New Delhi: ChatGPT maker OpenAI is planning to set up a large-scale data center in India as part of its global infrastructure expansion, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing unnamed sources. The proposed facility is expected to have at least 1 gigawatt capacity, though the location and timeline remain uncertain.
Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI has formally registered as a legal entity in India and begun building a local team. In August, the company announced plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, underscoring India’s importance as its second-largest user base worldwide.
The reported data center project is linked to Stargate, OpenAI’s branded push for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Bloomberg noted that CEO Sam Altman may announce details of the India project during his visit to the country in September.
Neither OpenAI nor Microsoft responded immediately to requests for comment. Reuters also said it could not independently verify Bloomberg’s report.
The Stargate initiative was unveiled in January by US President Donald Trump as part of a private sector-led investment worth up to $500 billion, involving SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle, to bolster global AI infrastructure.
