New Delhi: India’s evacuation mission from Iran under ‘Operation Sindhu’ continues to make progress, with 292 more Indian nationals safely brought back to the country on Tuesday. The latest group arrived in New Delhi from Mashhad on a special flight that landed at 3:30 AM, taking the total number of repatriated Indians to 2,295.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the development in a post on social media platform X, stating, “292 Indian nationals were evacuated from Iran on a special flight that arrived in New Delhi from Mashhad at 0330 hrs on 24th June. A total of 2,295 Indian nationals have now been brought home.”
‘Operation Sindhu’ was launched by the Indian government on June 18 to evacuate its citizens stranded in Iran amid escalating conflict and flight disruptions in the region. The mission was prompted by growing security concerns and incidents, including a reported strike on a medical students’ dormitory in Tehran’s Keshavarz Street area, which left some Indian students injured.
Indian officials in Tehran, in close coordination with the Iranian foreign ministry, provided immediate support and facilitated the relocation of affected students to safer areas.
The first batch of evacuees — 110 Indian nationals — returned to India on June 19, sharing harrowing accounts of the tense conditions they endured. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, personally welcomed them upon arrival in Delhi.
Indian authorities expressed gratitude to the governments of Iran and Armenia for their cooperation and swift facilitation of the evacuation process. Iran’s decision to open its airspace for the evacuation effort was particularly instrumental in ensuring the mission’s success.
As part of the operation, Indian citizens — including students and pilgrims — were initially moved from Tehran to Mashhad, where special chartered flights operated by Iranian carriers began transporting them back to India.
With over 4,000 Indian nationals residing in Iran, nearly half of whom are students, the evacuation efforts are expected to continue until all those who wish to return are safely brought home.
