Panaji: In a heated session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, the Opposition launched a scathing attack on the government over an allegedly illegal bungalow and over 50 other structures at the Old Goa heritage site, demanding immediate demolition. The issue sparked chaos in the House as the Opposition rushed to the Well, forcing Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar to adjourn proceedings for 10 minutes.
Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao, along with MLAs Rodolfo Fernandes and Vijai Sardesai, demanded action on what they called an “open and blatant violation” at the revered UNESCO World Heritage Site. “If the government is serious about preserving heritage, it must start by demolishing illegal constructions right next to protected monuments,” said Alemao.
TCP Minister Vishwajit Rane dismissed the protest as a political stunt, stating, “This is only to get front-page headlines every day.” He maintained that the issue is sub judice and cannot be commented on or acted upon until the court decides.
Responding to queries in the House, Minister for Archives and Archaeology Subhash Phal Dessai assured that no illegal activities or construction will be permitted at the site. He informed that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Goa Circle, is actively monitoring and maintaining seven protected monuments in Old Goa, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral.
He reiterated that the ASI has undertaken a structured conservation programme that includes daily monitoring, cleaning, ward duties, and enforcement of regulations within prohibited zones. Violations are referred to the District Magistrate for action under ASI norms.
However, the Opposition insisted that government silence on the matter amounts to complicity and demanded clarity on how such structures could come up under the ASI’s watch. “Goans will not forgive this betrayal of our heritage,” said MLA Rodolfo Fernandes.
