PORVORIM: Terming Sonsoddo as “”Disaster””, the Opposition today lambasted the government’sgovernment’s failure to solve the long pending issue of a garbage dump.
Curtorim MLA Alex Reginaldo raised the issue claiming that the continuous flow of Leachate, even in the non-monsoon months from the Sonsoddo Garbage dump to the adjacent roads and to the fields which, poses dangerous health hazards to the workers, commuters and the people living in the area.
The Opposition said that Sonsoddo has become a disaster and the state government must involve a disaster management agency to deal with legacy waste before everything comes crashing down.

AAP MLA Venzy Viegas said the Sonsoddo issue has remained unresolved because the government has neglected the root cause of the problem.
He said that clearing work is going on at Sonsodo, but there is no solution. Sonsodo is not getting cleared as we are not going to roots of the cause of the problem.
Minister for Urban Development Vishwajit Rane said that Goa Government had taken the decision to “”Remediate the existing dumpsites at various locations in Goa”” through Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC).
“”The list of legacy dumps in the State was obtained fromDirectorate of Municipal Administration and Directorate of Panchayats. Legacy waste dump site at Sonsoddo is one the site was taken up for Remediation,”” said Rane.
Minister said that remediation works of the old legacy waste dump matured waste dump at Sonsoddo site, commenced in December 2019. Remediation works had to be discontinued during the COVID-19 pandemic as a lockdown was imposed.
He further said that the Remediation of legacy waste works had to be discontinued during monsoon from June till November every year and were only undertaken during fair dry period.
“”Remediation of legacy waste at Sonsoddo was completed in this month i.e. March 2023. Presently the disposal of recovered fractions that are is inerts and Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) is in process. Also, order was granted for 5 tanks to control Leachate flowing”” Rane added.
Rane said that GWMC, through contractor is periodically cleaning that stretch, however, the indiscriminate dumping of waste by the locals is witnessed on a regular basis and it goes on unabated. It is also the duty of adjoining Village Panchayats to ensure that waste is collected from source i.e. House-to-House and treated on a daily basis, to prevent littering.
