New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Opposition for demanding a debate on Operation Sindoor, saying the move had backfired and left them politically bruised. Speaking at the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentary party meeting, the Prime Minister reportedly said the Opposition had “shot itself in the foot” by pushing for a discussion on the government’s decisive counter-terror operation in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
According to sources, PM Modi told NDA MPs that the Opposition made a “mistake” by insisting on a debate during the Monsoon Session of Parliament last week. “They got badly thrashed in that debate,” the Prime Minister is believed to have remarked, describing the Opposition’s approach as one of “self-harm.”
This was the second NDA parliamentary party meeting since the formation of the new government in June 2024.
During the meeting, NDA MPs passed a resolution lauding PM Modi’s leadership in responding to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead. Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was the government’s military response, targeting terrorist training camps across the Line of Control.
The resolution hailed Modi’s “unwavering resolve, visionary statesmanship, and resolute command,” saying his leadership had “ignited a renewed spirit of unity and pride in the hearts of all Indians.”
It also saluted the Indian armed forces for their bravery and commitment during the operation. “Their courage highlights their unflinching devotion to protecting our nation,” the resolution stated.
According to the NDA, Operation Sindoor was a “precise and targeted” mission designed to be non-escalatory while effectively neutralizing terror infrastructure. The alliance said the action reflected India’s zero-tolerance policy on terrorism and its firm commitment to take “whatever steps necessary” to dismantle terror networks.
NDA MPs also credited PM Modi for spearheading one of India’s most extensive global diplomatic outreach efforts in the aftermath of the operation. The government facilitated visits by 59 Members of Parliament to 32 countries, aimed at conveying India’s position on terrorism and highlighting the global threat posed by such acts.
“This is one of the most comprehensive global outreach initiatives ever launched by India,” the resolution stated. “It underlined how India has been a consistent victim of terrorism and why a terror attack in one part of the world must be treated as a crime against humanity everywhere.”
The MPs expressed their deep condolences to the families of the 26 victims of the Pahalgam attack. “This terror attack saddened and enraged every Indian,” the statement said.
The NDA, through its resolution, reiterated the government’s strong and clear message: India will not hesitate to act firmly in defense of its people and its sovereignty and will not allow political debates to undermine national security actions.
As tensions over terrorism and cross-border threats continue, the political divide in Parliament appears to be widening, with the government standing its ground and the Opposition now seemingly on the defensive after miscalculating the public and political response to the Operation Sindoor debate.
