CALANGUTE: Close on the heels of the uproar in Calangute constituency with regards to urban area status, the Village panchayat of Calangute is embroiled in yet another controversy with regards granting of NOC for petrol pump on cultivable land.
The panchayat of Calangute has granted NOC for construction of retail outlet (petrol pump) by Esmeralda Josephine do Rosario Pinto Barreto.
While the villagers were up in arms against the construction, the ward member of Naika Waddo has now joined the bandwagon to oppose the petrol pump.
In a strongly worded letter to the Sarpanch Shawn Martins, Ward member Sudesh Mayenkar has said that the permission/NOC was issued to the said applicant for the construction of petrol pump despite his opposition in the meeting.
He said that he being the ward member of the said area, he had raised strong objection for the said application as the land where the said petrol Pump is to be constructed in an agricultural land, surrounded by cultivable fields of other farmers.
He also stated that usage of petroleum products in the field area will certainly damage the fertile agricultural land and that would discourage the farmers to carry out their activities.
“Many farmers had approached me with objections against the said development in the fields which will destroy their cultivable land and area will be mushroomed with unwanted commercial activities,” he mentioned in his letter.
He also wrote that he was very disappointed and was shocked to learn that in spite of his objection in the meeting held on 09/06/2021, as the ward member of that area the permission/NOC was issued to the said applicant.
Mr. Mayekar also requested the secretary to place his objection on record and issue him a certified copy of the minutes of the meeting held on 09/06/2021 and the Resolution passed in the said meeting against the application of Esmeralda Josephine do Rosario Pinto Barreto.
