New Delhi: India is preparing to submit new evidence to the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) 1267 Sanctions Committee today, urging the designation of The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) affiliate, as a global terrorist organisation. The move comes in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead.
According to sources, the Indian delegation will provide concrete intelligence linking TRF to the attack, asserting the group’s operational and financial links to Pakistan’s terror networks. The dossier also seeks travel bans and financial sanctions on TRF members.
This is India’s third attempt to push for TRF’s designation under the UNSC’s terrorism sanctions regime. However, past efforts were blocked, reportedly due to opposition from Pakistan and support from China — both of whom have been accused of shielding the group at the UN.
Pakistan, a non-permanent member of the UNSC, is said to have played a key role in keeping TRF’s name out of official UNSC statements, including one condemning the April 22 Pahalgam attack — despite the group having claimed responsibility twice.
UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee
The 1267 Sanctions Committee, established in 1999, targets individuals and entities associated with Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and affiliated groups such as LeT. The committee is empowered to impose asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes under resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011), and 2253 (2015).
Indian officials say their latest submission is backed by strong intelligence proving TRF’s role in cross-border terrorism, weapons smuggling, recruitment of militants, and targeted killings in the Kashmir Valley. TRF, formed after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, is widely seen as a proxy outfit created by LeT to mask its direct involvement in terror activities.
Escalating Tensions Between India and Pakistan
India’s decision to bring Pakistan’s terror links to global attention comes just days after a fragile ceasefire agreement between the two nations was overshadowed by escalating military action. In retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, India launched precision airstrikes under ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Pakistan responded with drone and missile attacks aimed at Indian territories, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. However, Indian defence systems successfully intercepted all incoming threats, and the armed forces retaliated with full force.
India’s renewed diplomatic offensive at the UN underscores its intent to expose and isolate Pakistan’s state-sponsored terror infrastructure on the international stage.
