PANAJI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing sharp criticism after choosing to attend an election rally in Bihar while violence and bloodshed rocked Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir, leaving innocent civilians dead and several others injured.
The decision has sparked outrage among political leaders and citizens alike, who argue that the Prime Minister failed to rise to the occasion during a moment of national grief.
Amarnath Panjikar, Chairman of the GPCC Media Department, issued a scathing statement condemning Modi’s actions, or lack thereof, following the tragedy. He pointed out that upon returning from Saudi Arabia, the Prime Minister did not visit grieving families in Jammu & Kashmir, did not attend a crucial all-party meeting, did not address the nation to offer courage and solidarity, and did not meet with injured victims still fighting for their lives. Instead, Modi promptly headed to an election rally in Bihar, which Panjikar says highlights a disturbing prioritization of political campaigning over national mourning.
“Is the lust for power so great that mourning the dead has become an inconvenience?” Panjikar questioned, accusing Modi of acting more like a campaigner than a leader. The statement went on to ask whether this is the “new India” that was promised — one where votes seem to matter more than human lives. The Congress leader emphasized that citizens are watching, grieving, and angry, demanding answers from the nation’s highest office.
Among the pointed questions posed to the Prime Minister were: why was comforting victims not a priority, why was national unity ignored for political gain, and why was leadership absent in a time of crisis? Panjikar concluded that the silence from the top is not just disappointing, but disgraceful, insisting that India will neither forget nor forgive this moment.
“The Prime Minister owes this nation more than slogans. He owes us humanity,” he said.
