New Delhi: In a significant escalation, Pakistan’s military opened fire across the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pargawal sector late last night. This marks a rare instance of cross-border firing along the International Border, which is typically less volatile than the Line of Control (LoC). Indian defense sources confirmed that the Border Security Force (BSF) responded promptly and effectively to the unprovoked aggression.
The incident follows a series of ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the LoC, including mortar shelling in sectors such as Arnia and Sia. These actions have heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, especially in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, predominantly Hindu tourists. India has accused Pakistan of supporting the militants responsible for the attack, a claim Islamabad denies.
In response to the mounting tensions, India has taken several diplomatic and strategic measures. The government has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, revoked visas for Pakistani nationals, and closed the Wagah-Attari border. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to “identify, track, and punish” those behind the Pahalgam attack, emphasizing that the perpetrators will face severe consequences.
Pakistan, on the other hand, has warned of “catastrophic consequences” if India initiates military action. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar claimed that Pakistan has “credible intelligence” about India’s plans for a military offensive within the next 24 to 36 hours. He assured that Pakistan would respond with full force to defend its sovereignty.
The United Nations has called for restraint from both sides, urging them to pursue justice through lawful means and avoid actions that could lead to further escalation. The international community remains concerned about the potential for a broader conflict in the region.
As the situation continues to develop, both India and Pakistan are on high alert, with military forces closely monitoring the border areas. The coming hours and days will be critical in determining whether the current tensions will de-escalate or lead to a more significant confrontation.
