New Delhi: Pakistan has stepped into a crucial diplomatic role by hosting ceasefire discussions between Iran and the United States in Islamabad, even as it imposed a ban on Israeli media coverage of the talks. The negotiations are part of ongoing efforts to ease tensions following weeks of escalating conflict in the Gulf region.
An Iranian delegation led by senior leader Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf has arrived in the Pakistani capital, while the United States is being represented by Vice President JD Vance. The discussions follow a period of intense hostilities triggered by recent military strikes involving the US and Israel, which led to significant casualties, instability in the Strait of Hormuz, and a surge in global oil prices.
Earlier this week, Pakistan played a key role in facilitating a temporary two week ceasefire between the two sides. However, the situation remains fragile, with both parties entering talks cautiously. The negotiations are being conducted indirectly, with Iranian and American representatives seated in separate rooms at a hotel, while Pakistani officials shuttle between them to mediate.
One of the main sticking points in the discussions is the situation in Lebanon. Iran has insisted that any ceasefire agreement must also address Israeli military actions in the region. In contrast, the United States and Israel have not agreed to include this condition, creating a significant hurdle in reaching a comprehensive deal.
The continued violence and lack of consensus on key issues have raised concerns about the durability of the ceasefire and the possibility of the talks breaking down. Despite these challenges, the negotiations are seen as a critical opportunity to prevent further escalation and stabilise the region.
