New Delhi: For the fifth night in a row, Pakistani troops have violated the ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, triggering a measured but firm response from the Indian Army, defence officials confirmed on Monday.
The latest unprovoked firing occurred during the night of April 28–29 in areas opposite Kupwara and Baramulla districts, as well as the Akhnoor sector. No casualties have been reported so far.
“In response to the unprovoked small arms firing by the Pakistan Army, the Indian Army responded in a measured and effective manner,” said an official Army statement.
The continued ceasefire violations come in the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following last week’s terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including a Nepali tourist. Since Thursday night, Pakistani forces have repeatedly targeted Indian positions across multiple LoC sectors.
In retaliation to the terror attack, India has rolled out a series of strong diplomatic and strategic measures. These include suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Attari land border, and expelling Pakistani military attachés.
In response to India’s actions, Islamabad has threatened to suspend all existing bilateral agreements with New Delhi, including the 1972 Simla Agreement, which forms the legal basis for the recognition of the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
India has also taken a strong diplomatic stance at the United Nations, calling out Pakistan’s historical role in supporting terrorism. India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Yojna Patel, condemned Pakistan after its Defence Minister Khawaja Asif acknowledged the country’s past involvement in training and funding terrorist groups.
Speaking in a recent interview with Sky News, Asif had said, “We have been doing this dirty work for the US for the past three decades, including the West and the UK.”
Calling the admission “not surprising,” Patel described Pakistan as a “rogue state” and urged the global community to no longer ignore its role in global terrorism. “The world can no longer turn a blind eye,” she stated, thanking international partners for their “strong, unequivocal support” for India in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack.
