New Delhi: A Pakistani drone crossed the Line of Control into Indian territory in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district and dropped a consignment containing suspected explosives, ammunition and narcotics, triggering large-scale search operations by security forces in the sensitive border region.
According to officials, the drone entered Indian airspace in the Khadi Karmada area of Poonch and remained inside for over five minutes before returning across the Line of Control. During this brief but concerning incursion, the drone released material that included an improvised explosive device, live ammunition and drugs, raising serious security concerns amid heightened alert levels in the Jammu region.
Soon after the intrusion was detected, the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched joint cordon and search operations across Khadi Karmada and nearby areas. The objective of the operation is to locate and secure all dropped items and to rule out any possible terrorist movement or infiltration attempt on the ground. Security agencies are closely examining the recovered materials to determine their origin, composition and intended use.
Visuals showing the recovered items have surfaced, underscoring the seriousness of the incident. Officials said investigations are ongoing to assess the threat posed by the drone activity and to identify any networks involved in facilitating such cross-border operations.
The drone incident comes at a time of heightened security across Jammu and Kashmir due to New Year celebrations. Surveillance has been intensified along the border, in forested hinterlands and across key transit routes. Security forces have also stepped up anti-terror operations following intelligence inputs suggesting the presence of terrorist groups in mountainous and forested areas of the region.
Cordon and search operations have been carried out in parts of Poonch, Kishtwar and adjoining districts, with troops using drones, aerial surveillance equipment and sniffer dogs to monitor difficult terrain and track suspicious movement. In Poonch, additional searches were conducted along the Indo-Pak border following reports of possible militant activity.
Vehicle checks have also been intensified along major highways, including the Pathankot-Jammu-Srinagar route, to prevent the movement of arms, explosives or infiltrators. Officials said these measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure public safety and maintain security during a period of increased vulnerability.
Security forces remain on high alert as investigations into the drone intrusion continue.
