PANJAI: The uncertainty for vendors displaced from an unsafe market building in Panaji may soon end, with the Bombay High Court scheduled to hear their plea in October.
The vendors, who were evicted from the structure adjacent to El Dorado Plaza, have approached the High Court after the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) denied their request for temporary space to continue their businesses.
The building housed 13 ground-floor shops, including Kamal Pharmacy and several longstanding fabric stores.
The CCP evacuated the building in May following a structural stability report from the Civil Engineering Department of Goa College of Engineering, which deemed the structure unsafe.
The civic body has also issued a Request for Proposal seeking firms with the technical expertise to demolish the building.
The vendors’ plea seeks temporary premises to operate their businesses during demolition and reconstruction.
It also requests consideration for their allocation of space in the new building once it is completed. The High Court’s decision will determine the immediate future of these long-standing businesses in Panaji.
