PANAJI: In a moment of immense pride for Goa, Panaji has been awarded the title of Cleanest City in India in the population category of 50,000 to 200,000 under the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024-25. The prestigious award was presented by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at a grand ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
This national recognition highlights Panaji’s exemplary performance in urban sanitation and cleanliness under the Swachh Bharat Mission. From systematic door-to-door waste collection to achieving Garbage-Free City certification and implementing scientific waste treatment practices, Panaji has emerged as a model city for sustainable urban living.
Reacting to the accolade, Goa’s Minister for Urban Development, Vishwajit Rane, said: “Receiving this prestigious award is a proud moment for all of us — a reflection of our collective commitment to a cleaner, greener Goa.”
He also extended gratitude to the Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant for his leadership and continuous support in driving urban development initiatives across the state.
Special appreciation was extended to Mayor of Panaji, Rohit Monserrate, for his hands-on leadership in ensuring strict implementation of garbage segregation and sanitation protocols across the city.
Minister Rane added: “We are also deeply thankful to the citizens of Goa, our hardworking sanitation teams, and all stakeholders. Their cooperation and dedication have made this milestone possible,”
The Swachh Survekshan Awards are India’s largest urban sanitation survey, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The awards aim to inspire cities to improve cleanliness standards and adopt sustainable practices.
With this win, Panaji has reaffirmed its commitment to building a Swachh (Clean) and Viksit (Developed) Goa, in alignment with the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
