PANAJI: The Corporation of the City of Panaji has commenced the demolition of the old Municipal market building, housing the fish market. The demolition process will continue till November 8.
The fish cutters at the Panaji Municipal Market received an eviction notice from CCP Commissioner Clen Madeira, telling them to leave the former location so that the demolition operation could proceed more easily. Since the warning was sent out on October 9, the fish cutters had just 24 hours to go.
In order to protect safety and expedite the demolition process, Madeira stated in the notification that the Corporation has chosen to demolish the Fish Market Building.
“Today, October 10, is the deadline for the fish cutters to leave the property; if they don’t, the Corporation will take their stuff and remove them immediately,” said CCP
The demolition is causing anxiety among the community, especially because of a chapel housed within the structure. Locals worry about ruining.
The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has decided to temporarily shift vendors from the fish market to the area adjacent to the market where a temporary shed is being erected.
