Telaulim: In a thrilling finale to the UCT Trophy 9-a-side inter-village football tournament, Parish Youth Nuvem emerged victorious, defeating Guardian Angel Sports Club 1-0 in the final match held at the Government Primary School ground in Telaulim on Sunday. The tournament, organized by the United Club of Telaulim, drew over 2000 enthusiastic spectators who witnessed a display of skill, determination, and intense competition between the two teams.
The decisive moment of the match came in the first half when Joywin D’Costa of Parish Youth Nuvem scored the solitary goal that would prove to be the winner. Both teams adopted an attacking and fast-paced style of play, creating numerous scoring opportunities, but Nuvem’s robust defense held firm to secure the championship.
The final match was part of a highly anticipated event that saw both teams giving their all on the field. The electric atmosphere was palpable as the crowd cheered on their favorite teams, appreciating the high level of football displayed by the players.
The prize distribution ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including Mr. Churchill Alemao, the former Chief Minister and Member of Parliament, who served as the chief guest. Adv. Valanka Alemao, Chairperson of the AIFF Women Football Committee, and Rev. Fr. Gabriel Coutinho, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim, were also present to preside over the event. Other notable attendees included Rev. Fr. Valentine Alvares, Mr. Edwin Cardozo (Zilla Panchayat Member, Navelim), Mr. Michael Cardozo (Sarpanch of VP Navelim), Dr. Francis Lobo (CDPE), and several former footballers.
Special awards were presented to recognize the outstanding performances during the tournament. Maina Sports Club was awarded the Best Discipline Team. Macknino Colaco of Nuvem was named the Best Goalkeeper of the Finals, while Dravid Fernandes of Guardian Angel received the Best Defender award. Godwin Fernandes of Guardian Angel was honored as the Best Midfielder, and Joywin D’Costa of Nuvem was awarded both the Best Striker and the First Goal of the Final.
Parish Youth Nuvem’s journey to the finals was marked by impressive victories. They secured their place in the semifinals by defeating Santa Cruz Society of Poitomaddo with a convincing 4-1 win, where Shubert Colaco’s brace was instrumental in their victory. In the semifinals, Nuvem edged out Fr Agnel Youth Club Paroda 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout after the match ended 0-0 in regular time.
The UCT Trophy 9-a-side inter-village football tournament concluded on a high note, with Parish Youth Nuvem’s victory celebrating the spirit of football and community in Telaulim. The event was a testament to the dedication and passion of the players, organizers, and the enthusiastic crowd that supported the tournament throughout.
