Benaulim: In a high-octane pre-quarterfinal of the 34th Super Soccer Tournament, Fr Agnel Paroda survived a spirited fightback from DBO Fatorda, clinching an 8-7 win in a tense penalty shootout after a 2-2 deadlock in regulation time.
Paroda looked set for a comfortable passage when Kanchan Kori opened the scoring in the 17th minute, followed by Ashwon Fernandes’ strike in first-half stoppage time to make it 2-0.
But Fatorda roared back after the break, relentlessly pressing for a way back into the contest. Cliff Barretto halved the deficit late in the game, and in dramatic fashion, Edgar Noronha netted an injury-time equaliser to force a tiebreaker.
With the final quarterfinal berth at stake, both sides showed steely resolve from the spot, but Paroda ultimately held their nerve to edge through.
Meviton Barbosa of DBO Fatorda was named Man of the Match and received his trophy from Andrew Ferrao, GFA Executive Member.
