PANAJI: Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai on Monday criticised the State government for pushing through the full State Budget 2026–27 in the Assembly, stating that a large portion of the financial proposals would be passed without any discussion.
Sardesai said that nearly 79 per cent of the Demands for Grants would be approved without debate. According to him, ₹23,868 crore out of the total ₹30,194 crore Budget would be cleared without discussion in the House.
He argued that the government should have opted for a Vote on Account for four months instead of passing the entire Budget during the ongoing session. “The government could have passed a Vote on Account and later convened another Assembly session to discuss and pass the full Budget,” Sardesai said.
The GFP legislator also referred to a similar situation in the past, stating that former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had curtailed the Assembly session in 2013 under extraordinary circumstances and opted for a four-month Vote on Account, with the full Budget being passed in the July session.
“Passing the entire Budget now is an injustice to the Opposition that wanted to raise several issues and demands in the House,” Sardesai said, accusing the government of denying adequate debate on important financial matters.
Sardesai further raised concerns about the Shigmo float parade, stating that proper guidelines should be framed for the event. He pointed out that the parade often continues until early morning hours and said he had earlier informed the Tourism Minister that the matter should be discussed in the Assembly.
The GFP MLA maintained that issues affecting the public and government spending should receive proper deliberation in the House, and urged the government to ensure more structured discussions during future sessions.
