New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins expressed disappointment after his team’s 38-run defeat to Gujarat Titans in Match 51 of the IPL 2025, which all but eliminated them from playoff contention. Despite the loss, Cummins remains optimistic, stating that there is still “some hope” for the franchise’s future.
Gujarat Titans posted a formidable total of 224/6 in the first innings, thanks to half-centuries from Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler. SRH’s chase fell short, despite a valiant 74-run knock by Abhishek Sharma, finishing at 186/6. Sunrisers Hyderabad have won just three out of their 10 games so far, and their playoff hopes now depend on other results going their way.
Reflecting on the match, Cummins admitted to his own mistakes, saying, “Our power-play with the bat wasn’t great. I was as guilty as anyone else. We probably let them get 20-30 extra runs. I missed a couple of chances, and those things matter. Chasing 200 would have been more realistic.” He added that Gujarat’s batters capitalized on any loose deliveries, noting, “If you bowl bad balls, they put them away.”
Cummins also praised Sharma’s performance, highlighting his 74-run effort, and acknowledged the team’s struggles in the final stages of the chase. “We left it too late for the batters, but it was a good wicket, and we did well to restrict them to 140 in the last 14 overs,” he said.
Despite the loss, Cummins remains hopeful for the future of the team, pointing to the 2024 mega auction as a positive sign. “We can cling to some hope. The core of the group will be there for the next three years,” he stated.
With this win, Gujarat Titans moved up to second place in the points table, surpassing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on net run rate. RCB’s upcoming match against Chennai Super Kings could be crucial for Gujarat’s playoff hopes.
