New Delhi: Australia will head into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 without premier fast bowler Pat Cummins, as selectors confirmed his absence from the tournament scheduled from February 7 to March 8 across India and Sri Lanka. The global event will feature 20 teams competing at five venues in India and three in Sri Lanka.
Cummins has been ruled out as he continues to recover from a back injury, prompting Australia to reshuffle their squad ahead of the marquee tournament. Left arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis has been named as his replacement, while Matt Renshaw comes in for Matthew Short, adding depth to the batting lineup.
The experienced Cummins has been a key figure in Australia’s T20 setup over the years, claiming 66 wickets in 57 T20 international appearances. His most recent T20 outing came during the 2024 T20 World Cup, while his last international appearance overall was in the Ashes series during the 2025–26 season. His absence is a significant blow, particularly given his leadership and ability to deliver in high pressure matches.
In Cummins’ absence, Josh Hazlewood is expected to spearhead Australia’s pace attack. He will be supported by Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis and Dwarshuis, offering a mix of pace, swing and variations. The team will also rely on the all round abilities of Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis, whose medium pace bowling could prove valuable, especially on slower surfaces.
Renshaw’s inclusion strengthens the middle order and adds flexibility to the batting unit. His recent performances across formats have highlighted his adaptability, and his left handed presence provides balance against spin heavy conditions expected during the Sri Lanka leg of the tournament. Tim David’s return further bolsters Australia’s batting firepower.
Australia’s final squad reflects a balance of experience and versatility as they aim to challenge for the T20 World Cup title despite the absence of one of their most accomplished fast bowlers.
