New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday told National Democratic Alliance members that patience and wisdom had ultimately paid off in securing the India-US trade agreement. Addressing the parliamentary party meeting, he described the deal as essential for the country’s economic future and said the government had remained focused despite continuous criticism from rival parties.
The Prime Minister explained that the negotiations with Washington were the result of sustained engagement at the highest level and reflected a long term strategic vision. He emphasised that the agreement would open new opportunities for Indian industry, expand market access and strengthen the overall partnership between the two nations. According to him, the government chose dialogue and determination over political noise and that approach had now delivered concrete outcomes.
Referring to attacks from the opposition, he remarked that the government was repeatedly targeted but never deviated from its objective. He added that perseverance and careful decision making had ensured a favourable result for India. The pact, he said, was not merely a commercial arrangement but a step toward deeper cooperation in technology, energy and security.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also addressed the gathering and briefed lawmakers about the Union Budget. She outlined the major priorities for the coming year and explained how the budget complemented the new trade understanding with the United States. NDA members congratulated the Prime Minister for concluding the agreement and welcomed the announcement of lower reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods.
Following discussions between the two leaders, the United States agreed to reduce duties on Indian products from twenty five percent to eighteen percent. The decision was presented as a gesture of goodwill and respect, and both sides expressed confidence that bilateral trade would expand significantly. The understanding also includes greater purchases of American goods by India, particularly in the energy sector, along with efforts to remove non tariff barriers.
The Prime Minister later described the development as a moment of pride for the nation and thanked the American leadership for the positive step. He noted that closer economic ties would benefit people in both countries and contribute to global stability and prosperity. The government believes the agreement will strengthen India’s position in international trade and create new avenues for growth in the years ahead.
