PANAJI: In a fresh twist to the ongoing opposition unity talks in Goa, Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) MLA Viresh Borkar has reiterated that his party is open to forming an alliance, but alleged that GPCC President Amit Patkar is emerging as a major hurdle in the process.
Borkar said the people of Goa want opposition parties to come together to present a united front. However, he claimed that repeated “baseless statements” by Amit Patkar and South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes indicate reluctance within a section of the Congress leadership to align with RGP.
“We are open to forming an alliance, and the people of Goa also want the opposition to come together. But Amit Patkar and Capt Viriato Fernandes repeatedly make baseless statements and do not want an alliance with us,” Borkar said.
In a pointed remark, the RGP MLA alleged that Patkar has taken on the role of a “control-room operator,” suggesting that centralized decision-making and political rigidity are preventing meaningful progress in alliance discussions. He added that this approach needs to change if there is to be any positive outcome.
At the same time, Borkar drew a distinction within the Congress, stating that RGP is in constant talks with Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and Congress MLA Altone D’Costa. According to him, both leaders have been “fully cooperative and supportive” of efforts to explore a possible alliance.
