New Delhi: The recent Champions Trophy in Dubai has left the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) feeling snubbed, following a perceived slight during the closing ceremony. At the heart of the controversy is the exclusion of Sumair Ahmed, PCB’s Chief Operating Officer and tournament director, from the final presentation stage. This incident has prompted the PCB to file a formal complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC), seeking answers for what they deem an unacceptable oversight.
In the aftermath of India’s victory over New Zealand in the final, the PCB’s dissatisfaction centers on the absence of their representative during the ceremony. Despite their role as host nation, the PCB feels underappreciated and overlooked. The ICC, however, maintains that protocol dictates only specific high-ranking officials, such as CEOs, chairmen, vice-chairmen, or secretaries, are typically invited to such events. This stance has not alleviated the PCB’s concerns, as they argue that their role in organizing the tournament warrants greater recognition.
The ceremony itself was dominated by Indian figures, with BCCI President Roger Binny and ICC Chairman Jay Shah presenting awards to the winning team. The PCB’s exclusion has been met with disappointment and a call for a public clarification and assurance that similar incidents will not recur. As the PCB pushes for a resolution, the ICC’s response remains that protocol was followed, leaving little room for a formal apology or explanation.
