MAPUSA: Aldona Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira slammed the authorities for failing to restore power supply to the Peddem Sports Complex that has been without power on account of a fault for nearly a week now.
The local MLA toured the facility to see for himself that not only was there no supply at the complex but he also saw how budding athletes had to practise in the dark, or with torchlight whereas with other disciplines they couldn’t practice altogether.
“I saw that the athletes including weightlifters were practising in the dark. They have told me that there is no power supply at this indoor stadium for more than a week now and there is no one to repair the fault,” Adv Carlos said.
“I will take up the matter with the Chief Minister, because the portfolio is now with the Chief Minister,” he added.
“The Peddem stadium is supposed to be a Centre for Excellence under the Khelo India Mission. Here on account of this many athletes had to leave for the day early and couldn’t continue with their practices on account of there being no lights,” he added.
He said that he was informed that athletes were going to the toilets using the torchlights and that the toilets had no water which only compounded matters further.
