MAPUSA: On Tuesday night, a private passenger bus in Mapusa crushed and killed a 55-year-old Pune-born pedestrian who lived in Alorna-Pernem.
In this regard, the Mapusa police have detained Sunny Tukaram Mandrekar, 36, of Oxel-Siolim, the bus driver.
Reports state that the accident occurred at approximately 6:50 p.m. when Rajesh Karve, a pedestrian, was crossing the street at the bend in front of Union Pharmacy.
A private passenger bus from Siolim was making its way to the bus stop at the same moment.
Karve was run over by the back wheel of the bus after it knocked him down.
He was taken to the Mapusa District Hospital after suffering severe injuries in the accident, where he was pronounced dead.
Police Constables Vijay Gadekar and Sushant Chopdekar hurried to the scene and performed a panchnama as soon as they learned of the event.
They arrested the bus driver as well. Sub-Inspector Mangesh Palani of the Mapusa Police is doing additional inquiry.
