Margao: A 48-year-old man from Verna lost his life in the early hours of Monday after being struck by an unidentified car in a hit-and-run incident near the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) at Davondem, Margao.
According to a state complaint filed by Head Constable Navnath Naik of the Fatorda Police Station, the accident occurred at around 2:28 a.m., when the unidentified driver of a four-wheeler, reportedly speeding from KTC Margao towards Verna, hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road near SGDH.
The impact left the victim with grievous injuries, and the driver allegedly fled the scene without stopping to assist or report the incident.
A 108 ambulance arrived shortly after but declared the victim dead at the spot.
The deceased was later identified as Pravin Sawant (48), a resident of Verna, Salcete.
The body has been preserved at SGDH Margao for medico-legal examination and other formalities.
Fatorda Police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving and hit-and-run, and efforts are underway to trace the absconding driver and vehicle involved in the incident.
