New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp political attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam during a public address in Madurai, asserting that the people of Tamil Nadu were disillusioned with the current state government and seeking a credible alternative.
Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister said public sentiment in the state clearly reflected dissatisfaction with what he described as unfulfilled promises and widespread corruption. He stated that governance failures under the DMK had eroded public trust and added that the National Democratic Alliance was increasingly being viewed as the preferred option by voters.
The Prime Minister also criticised the DMK’s earlier alliance with the Indian National Congress, accusing both parties of neglecting Tamil Nadu’s vast coastal and infrastructure potential when they governed together. He said key projects such as the Maduravoyal elevated corridor and the Thoothukudi trans shipment hub remained stalled for years and existed largely on paper. According to him, significant progress on port development and infrastructure revival took place only after 2014, including the revitalisation of Chennai Port and the integration of major ports into a unified cluster.
Highlighting welfare delivery, the Prime Minister alleged that the state government was deliberately delaying benefits meant for economically weaker families. He pointed to the rural housing scheme under which several lakh homes had already been completed, while a large number remained pending due to delays in surveys and administrative processes. He questioned why poor families should suffer due to political considerations.
The Prime Minister further accused the DMK of prioritising dynastic politics over governance despite securing a full majority after decades. He alleged that corruption and mismanagement had harmed urban infrastructure in Madurai, citing poor roads, drainage issues, inadequate waste management, and declining cleanliness rankings. Referring to past political history, he said the city had been neglected and subjected to what he termed a culture of misrule.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister said the people of Tamil Nadu were ready for accountable governance focused on development, transparency, and public welfare, signalling what he described as a growing demand for change across the state.
