Pernem: The Pernem police have launched a massive probe into the Porascadem shooting incident, questioning nearly 50 people connected to sand extraction in the area following the gun attack that left two workers injured in the early hours of Tuesday.
Investigators are also verifying all licensed firearms in the region as part of efforts to trace the weapon used in the crime. Owners of guns from Porascadem, Naibag, Warkhand, Mopa, Ugvem, and Torse have been instructed to appear at the Pernem Police Station and provide details of their weapons.
Confirming the ongoing investigation, Police Inspector Sachin Lokre said police are pursuing multiple leads and are confident of making arrests soon. “Around 50 individuals involved in sand extraction have been called for questioning. We have also asked licensed gun holders from nearby areas to cooperate so that we can determine the firearm used in the shooting,” he said.
The victims, identified as Ramrishi Ramraj Paswan (54) and Lal Bahadur Goud, both hailing from Bihar, sustained gunshot injuries while extracting sand from the Terekhol River. They are currently receiving treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim, where their condition is reported to be stable.
Police sources said the attack may be linked to disputes over illegal sand extraction, a recurring issue in the coastal belt of Pernem. The authorities have stepped up surveillance in the region and are tightening controls over unauthorised mining and transport of sand to prevent further violence.
