COLVALE: The mystery behind the death of a 19-year-old youth found by the roadside at Pirna on Friday morning was solved within 15 hours, with Colvale Police apprehending the main accused involved in the brutal assault that led to the victim’s death.
The body of the youth, later identified as Kapil Chaudhary (19), a native of Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, was found lying in a grassy area about three metres off the road in the hilly region of Cansa, Thivim, around 8.30 am on Friday. Police observed multiple injuries and abrasions on the face and hands of the victim.
A PAN card bearing the name Deepak Thakur and an empty liquor bottle were recovered from his pocket.
The injured was shifted to the District Hospital, Mapusa, by a 108 ambulance, where the medical officer declared him brought dead.
Later, the victim’s father Shrinivas Singh (46) arrived at Colvale Police Station and identified the deceased as his son, Kapil Chaudhary.
He informed police that his son had left their home in Hathras stating he was going to Goa, after which his phone went unreachable. Singh lodged a complaint against unknown persons for the murder and robbery of his son’s belongings.
Subsequent investigation revealed that Kapil had hired a Thar SUV (GA 03 AH 5254) on October 30 from Gurudat Lawande (31), of Candolim, by showing a soft copy of a driving licence under the name Deepak Thakur.
Later that day, Lawande noticed through the vehicle tracker that the Thar had crossed into Maharashtra.
Lawande, accompanied by friends in a Kia Seltos (GA 06 F 2937), pursued the vehicle and intercepted it at Kankavli, Maharashtra. They brought Kapil back to Thivim, where he was allegedly assaulted with fists, kicks and a wooden stick found nearby.
Around 11 pm, the group allegedly abandoned him in an injured state in the hilly area. They reportedly also planted an empty liquor bottle in his pocket to make it appear that he was drunk.
Colvale Police have detained main accused Gurudat Lawande, who has confessed to his role in the crime.
His accomplices are currently absconding, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest them.
Police said further investigation is in progress.
