PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today assured to notify Lohia Maidan, Chieftains Memorial at Cuncolim, Martyrs Memorials at Assolna and Patradevi, Azad Maidan and others as Places of Historical Importance.
Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao raised the issue during the question hour in the assembly.
“I assure to notify Lohia Maidan, Chieftains Memorial at Cuncolim, Martyrs Memorials at Assolna and Patradevi, Azad Maidan and others as Places of Historical Importance,” said CM Sawant.
Sawant also said that state celebrated the Chieftains Martyrs Day on July 15 to commemorate the first uprising by the Goans against the Portuguese rule in 1583.
LoP Yuri Alemao also drew Sawant’s attention to the historic Lohia Maidan at Margao and Azad Maidan, Panaji, which he said, had turned into dens of drunkards and anti-social elements.
The Opposition leader further pointed out that Article 27 of the Constitution of India clearly states that no tax payers money be used in payment of expenses for the promotion of maintenance of any particular religion or religious denomination.
Alemao has also urged the State government to restore places of historical importance including shrines without discrimination.
