PAANJi: The open space near Tanya Hotel may soon be utilised for a full-fledged sports City complex with space for indoor games and a walking track on its periphery.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, Sports Minister Govind Gaude, Vasco BJP Mandal President Deepak Naik, MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues, Vice Chairperson Amay Chopdekar, ward Councillor Girish Borker and other sports department officials carried out a joint inspection at open space near Tanya Hotel Vasco on Thursday afternoon.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, Sports Minister Govind Gaude said that the sports department was in possession of the land of around 13,000 sq meters.
“The Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar has placed a demand to set up a full-fledged sports complex, and we are here to carry out a joint inspection of this land with my staff to see how many different games courts can be fitted in this area after discussing with the consultant. Salkar has asked for a Futsal ground, a multi-purpose indoor games court for badminton, and a Table tennis court on top priority surrounded by a walking track,” he said
Salkar said “We want to develop new sports infrastructure, and we are trying to set up infrastructure for sports in demand but which we do not have, especially like the Futsal etc.”
“I am not sure why a world-class swimming pool proposed here could not be taken up, but I will speak with my staff and find out the reason, and the basic reason could be technical grounds. We already have a swimming pool in Sada, and we have a proposal for another swimming pool in the Mormugao Taluka, provided there is the feasibility of land available,” he said.
Salkar added that they have already taken the initiative to upgrade all Government gyms and it’s equipment across Goa, including having good equipment and having ACs in these gyms. The gym above the Tilak Maidan is a good gym, and we will improve things further with more equipment and better facilities, and we will also take care of carrying out works on the roofing of the indoor courts before rains so that the issue of leakages are addressed ” said Gaude
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said that the land was reclaimed land in possession of the SAG but was not put to proper use.
“We see that the land is being used for parking and sometimes dumping, and there is no proper use of this land. We don’t have proper Sports facilities in Vasco, and we proposed that the Vascokars get gold facilities in a land that is already available. We can have an indoor cricket pitch, Futsal ground, table tennis and other indoor games. We also have another adjoining area of around 8000 sq meters which, if considered, can make the area of 22,000 for the sports complex,” he said.
