New Delhi: In a profound gesture of international solidarity, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Sri Lanka’s highest civilian honor, the Mithra Vibhushana, during his strategic visit to the island nation. This prestigious award not only recognizes PM Modi’s relentless efforts to fortify India-Sri Lanka relations but also celebrates the enduring cultural and spiritual heritage shared by the two nations.
The Mithra Vibhushana award, presented by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, symbolizes the depth and warmth of the India-Sri Lanka bond. Specifically designed to honor extraordinary global friendships, this medal represents a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between India and Sri Lanka.
PM Modi expressed deep gratitude upon receiving the honor, emphasizing that it was not just a personal recognition but a matter of pride for the 140 crore people of India. This award marks the 22nd international honor bestowed upon PM Modi by a foreign country, underscoring his stature as a global statesman.
The Mithra Vibhushana medal itself is adorned with symbols that reflect the cultural and spiritual ties between India and Sri Lanka. The Dharma Chakra represents the shared Buddhist legacy, while the Pun Kalasa signifies prosperity and renewal. The Navrathna, or nine precious gems, encapsulate the enduring friendship between the two nations.
Introduced in 2008, the Mithra Vibhushana has been conferred on only three other leaders before PM Modi, highlighting its exclusivity and significance. During his visit, PM Modi and the Sri Lankan President signed several key agreements, including a major defense cooperation pact and projects in energy and agriculture, aiming to further bolster bilateral ties.
This strategic visit also showcased PM Modi’s vision for regional cooperation and cultural diplomacy, reinforcing the historic and deep-rooted friendship between India and Sri Lanka.
