New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended congratulations to Tarique Rahman on the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s decisive success in the parliamentary elections, underscoring India’s commitment to backing a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh.
As vote counting progressed, India’s government issued a statement recognising the outcome of a hard-fought election and expressing the desire to strengthen ties with Dhaka under its newly elected leadership. The message from New Delhi highlighted the importance of stability, cooperation and prosperity in the South Asian neighbourhood.
Modi’s congratulations came shortly after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party asserted its majority and signalled its intention to form the next government. India’s outreach emphasised respect for the democratic process and reiterated a willingness to work closely with the incoming administration on shared goals.
The Indian statement also underscored the longstanding people-to-people links between the two countries and expressed confidence that the new government in Bangladesh would pursue policies that further regional peace and development. While India and Bangladesh have collaborated across multiple sectors in recent years, the focus now shifts to ensuring continuity and deepening engagement under the BNP leadership.
Leaders and officials in New Delhi stressed that constructive dialogue with Dhaka remains a priority, with both nations poised to explore areas of mutual interest ranging from trade and connectivity to cultural and strategic cooperation. The broader message framed India’s congratulations not only as a gesture of goodwill but also as a reaffirmation of support for democratic outcomes and inclusive governance in Bangladesh.
As Bangladesh moves forward with forming its new government and charting its policy course, India’s response signals an effort to build on existing ties while adapting to the changed political landscape in its eastern neighbour.
