New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed solidarity with Nepal following devastating landslides and floods caused by heavy rainfall, which have claimed at least 52 lives. The extreme weather has disrupted life across multiple regions, with eight major rivers in eastern Nepal crossing the danger mark.
Taking to social media, the Prime Minister conveyed his condolences and assured that India stands ready to provide assistance. “The loss of lives and property due to heavy rains in Nepal is heartbreaking. We stand with the Nepali people and the Government of Nepal during this difficult time. As a friendly neighbor and first responder, India is committed to providing any kind of assistance that may be needed,” he said.
Nepal has experienced continuous rainfall since Friday, triggering landslides and floods. The Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force (APF) have been actively engaged in rescue operations across affected areas.
The Nepali government announced immediate relief of Nepali Rupees 2,00,000 for families of those who lost their lives in the disaster. Injured individuals will receive free medical treatment, according to the National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Authority (NDRRMA).
Ilam district was reported as the worst affected, with 37 casualties from landslides and floods. Other districts in the province recorded 12 additional deaths, with one person missing in Koshi and at least 17 others reported dead across the region.
In the southern plains, lightning strikes claimed three lives in Rautahat, leaving one person injured, while rescue teams in Bara continue searching for a missing individual.
India’s prompt support underscores the strong ties between the two neighboring nations during natural disasters.
