New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday underscored the transformative strides India has made in the defence sector during his 11-year tenure, with a strong emphasis on modernisation and achieving self-reliance in defence production.
Marking the completion of over a decade in office, PM Modi shared a post on X, stating, “The last 11 years have marked significant changes in our defence sector, with a clear focus on both modernisation and becoming self-reliant when it comes to defence production. It is gladdening to see how the people of India have come together with the resolve of making India stronger.”
His comments came alongside a thread shared from a government-run citizen engagement platform, which showcased major developments across various sectors under his leadership.
The post titled “India’s Rise in 11 Years: Power, Partnerships, and Progress” highlighted the country’s growing stature on the global stage and the advancements in defence, technology, and trade. It credited PM Modi’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) for driving domestic innovation and expanding India’s global influence.
One of the most notable achievements cited was the massive surge in defence exports—from ₹1,940 crore in 2014-15 to ₹23,622 crore in 2024-25. The launch of India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, was also listed as a milestone in bolstering India’s maritime strength.
India’s missile capabilities have also seen significant upgrades, including the successful test of the extended-range BrahMos missile launched from a Su-30 MKI fighter jet.
Beyond defence, the post spotlighted India’s expanding international partnerships, noting landmark trade agreements with the UK and the UAE. It also highlighted India’s role as a responsible global actor, especially in peacekeeping operations. With over 2.9 lakh troops deployed in more than 50 United Nations missions, India continues to be a leading contributor to global peace.
The post also recalled India’s humanitarian support during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it supplied two lakh vaccine doses to UN peacekeepers, reaffirming its commitment to global health and cooperation.
Summing up the nation’s trajectory, the post described India as a “confident, decisive, and respected global leader,” attributing this transformation to PM Modi’s “bold vision and unwavering commitment to a stronger Bharat.”
