New Delhi: In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that Tamil Nadu has experienced a substantial boost in central funding since 2014, receiving three times more than previous years. This announcement was made during the inauguration of the New Pamban Bridge in Rameswaram, a project that showcases India’s advanced engineering capabilities and underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure development in the state.
The New Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge, is a testament to innovative infrastructure planning. Situated over the Palk Strait, it connects Rameswaram Island to the mainland, enhancing connectivity and promising to boost trade and tourism in Tamil Nadu. PM Modi also launched a new train service between Rameswaram and Chennai, further integrating the region with the rest of the country.
Addressing a public gathering, PM Modi took a veiled swipe at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, mentioning that some individuals have a “habit of crying” despite the increased funding. He emphasized that the central government has made Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure a top priority, with the state’s rail budget increasing more than sevenfold in the past decade. Prior to 2014, Tamil Nadu’s annual rail allocation was a modest Rs 900 crore, which has now exceeded Rs 6,000 crore. Additionally, the central government is modernizing 77 railway stations across the state, including the one in Rameswaram.
PM Modi underscored Tamil Nadu’s crucial role in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation. He believes that as the state unlocks its full potential, it will accelerate the country’s overall progress. The Prime Minister’s comments came in response to accusations from the DMK that the central government has not released sufficient funds despite the state’s sound financial management.
