New Delhi: As India celebrated Ram Navami on April 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stood at the epicenter of a landmark moment in the nation’s infrastructure history by inaugurating the New Pamban Bridge, a marvel of engineering that aligns India with global icons like the Golden Gate Bridge and Tower Bridge. This milestone not only underscores India’s technological prowess but also signifies a leap in connectivity for Rameswaram, a sacred site for millions.
The New Pamban Bridge is a testament to modern engineering, spanning a length of 2.07 kilometers across the Palk Strait in Tamil Nadu. It connects Rameswaram Island with the mainland, serving as a critical link for pilgrims and the local economy. Constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited at a cost of over Rs 700 crore, the bridge features a 72.5-meter navigational span capable of being vertically lifted to 17 meters. This innovative design ensures that large ships can pass safely beneath while allowing for seamless train operations.
The New Pamban Bridge is designed to accommodate two railway tracks, with a speed limit of up to 80 kmph, enhancing transportation efficiency and capacity. Its construction incorporates special engineering techniques aimed at minimizing maintenance needs, ensuring a projected lifespan of 100 years. The bridge’s durability is further enhanced by the use of stainless steel reinforcement, fully welded joints, and high-grade protective paint, all of which protect it against the harsh marine environment.
During the inauguration, PM Modi also flagged off a Coast Guard ship and the new Rameswaram-Tambaram train service. The old Pamban Bridge, built in 1914 by British engineers, had become a safety concern, necessitating its replacement. The new bridge not only improves connectivity but also honors India’s heritage by standing as a modern counterpart to historical engineering marvels.
In his visit to the region, PM Modi shared an aerial video of the Ram Setu, a natural chain of shoals that links India and Sri Lanka, symbolizing the cultural richness and spiritual significance of the area.
