New Delhi: Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, NDA’s candidate, was elected India’s 15th Vice President on Tuesday, defeating opposition nominee B Sudershan Reddy by 152 votes. Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes while Reddy received 300. The election followed the sudden resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Radhakrishnan is expected to take oath on September 12.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and senior leaders including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Chandrababu Naidu, Manoj Sinha, Jitan Ram Manjhi, and Chirag Paswan congratulated Radhakrishnan, praising his vast experience, integrity, and dedication to public service. Modi expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan will be an outstanding Vice President, strengthening constitutional values and enhancing parliamentary discourse. Former VP Jagdeep Dhankhar also lauded him, saying the office will attain greater veneration under his stewardship.
Of the 767 votes cast, 15 were invalid. NDA had support from 427 MPs on paper, with YSRCP’s 11 MPs also voting for Radhakrishnan. The NDA candidate received 14 votes more than expected, fueling speculation of cross-voting from opposition ranks.
