New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the YUGM Conclave in New Delhi on Tuesday, underlined the significant reforms undertaken in India’s education sector, stating that the New Education Policy (NEP) is designed to align with global educational benchmarks. The conclave — named YUGM, meaning “confluence” in Sanskrit — brought together key leaders from government, academia, industry, and the innovation ecosystem for a strategic dialogue on education and research.
PM Modi emphasized that the education system is instrumental in shaping the nation’s youth for the future, and hence, it is being systematically modernized. “Our New Education Policy reflects international standards. Reforms in curriculum, learning materials, and teaching methods are all focused on preparing our students to thrive globally,” he said.
He also pointed to the integration of cutting-edge technology in education, highlighting AI-based infrastructure introduced under the “One Nation, One Education” initiative, which the government aims to expand nationwide.
Highlighting India’s growing investment in innovation, PM Modi noted that the country’s gross expenditure on research and development (R&D) has more than doubled over the past decade. “In 2013-14, R&D spending was just ₹60,000 crore. Today, we’ve increased it to ₹1.25 lakh crore. We are ready for R&D — and by that, I mean ready and disruptive,” he said.
Several pioneering initiatives were launched at the YUGM Conclave to drive India toward self-reliance and innovation. These include:
Superhubs at IIT Kanpur (focused on Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems) and IIT Bombay (specializing in Biosciences, Biotechnology, Health, and Medicine),
Wadhwani Innovation Network (WIN) Centres at leading research institutions to promote the commercialization of research,
Collaborations with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to fund late-stage translational projects and advance scientific innovation.
The conclave marks a significant step forward in aligning India’s education and research framework with global best practices, while fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship at the national level.
