New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent comment during the inauguration of the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala has stirred political discussions. Addressing the audience, PM Modi remarked, “Today, Shashi Tharoor is sitting here. Today’s program will disturb the sleep of some people. The message has gone wherever it had to go.”
This direct reference to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who represents Thiruvananthapuram, has drawn attention to his evolving role within the party. Tharoor’s decision to personally welcome PM Modi at the Thiruvananthapuram airport, despite facing delays due to what he termed the “dysfunctional” state of Delhi’s airport, was notable. He shared his experience on social media, stating, “Despite delays at the dysfunctional Delhi airport, managed to land in Thiruvananthapuram in time to receive Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his arrival in my constituency.”
Tharoor’s involvement in the Vizhinjam project has been multifaceted. He has praised the port as a significant development for Kerala, highlighting its potential to enhance the state’s maritime infrastructure. However, he has also expressed concerns over unresolved issues, particularly regarding the rehabilitation and compensation of displaced fisher families. In July 2024, Tharoor chose to abstain from a ceremony marking the trial run of a vessel at the port, citing the government’s failure to address these grievances.
The Vizhinjam International Seaport, developed by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd under a public-private partnership, is one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. With an estimated cost of Rs 8,867 crore, the port aims to position Kerala as a key player in global maritime trade. PM Modi’s visit underscores the project’s significance in India’s broader economic strategy.
Tharoor’s nuanced stance on the Vizhinjam project reflects his commitment to both development and social justice. While he acknowledges the port’s potential economic benefits, he remains vocal about the need for equitable solutions for affected communities. His actions and statements continue to influence political discourse in Kerala and beyond.
